What is video analysis and how does it help my child?
Video analysis helps players understand the game better.
By reviewing key moments from matches or training, players can see their positioning, movement and decision-making in context.
This supports:
Better game awareness
Clearer understanding of their role
Improved confidence and consistency
It is always used as a learning tool, not a judgement tool.
Is this suitable for young players?
Yes. Video analysisis adapted to the age, stage and personality of the player.
For younger players, analysis is:
Simple and positive
Focused on strengths first
Limited to a small number of clear points
The aim is to support enjoyment and understanding, not overwhelm.
Will my child be criticised?
No.
My approach is player-centred and supportive.
Analysis focuses on:
What the player is doing well
One or two key areas to improve
Clear, practical guidance they can apply in training
Confidence and wellbeing are always prioritised.
How is the footage captured?
I use an xBot Go automated camera, which records full-pitch footage.
This allows players to:
See the whole game, not just close-ups
Understand spacing, positioning, and movement
Learn how decisions fit into team play
Footage is used responsibly and shared only with consent.
Does video analysis replace coaching?
No, it supports coaching.
Video analysis works best alongside on-pitch sessions.
Clips are often linked directly to:
Coaching themes
Session objectives
Individual development goals
This creates a joined-up learning experience.
How often should video analysis be done?
That depends on the player. For some, a one-off review is helpful. For others, ongoing analysis across a block supports consistency and progress.
Is this only for elite or academy players?
Not at all.
Video analysis is valuable for:
Grassroots players
Players stepping up a level
Those who learn visually
Players seeking confidence or clarity
It’s about development, not labels.
Will my child understand the feedback?
Yes. Feedback is delivered in clear, age-appropriate language.
Where appropriate, feedback can be:
Written
Discussed verbally
Shared with parents
Players are encouraged to ask questions and take ownership of learning.
How does this fit with my child’s team?
The aim is to support, not conflict with, team coaching.
Analysis focuses on:
Individual understanding
Decision-making
Role clarity
It is never about criticising team tactics or other coaches.
How do I know this is the right approach?
I am:
A UEFA licensed coach
A PFSA Level 3 Performance Analyst
Experienced across grassroots, youth and senior football
More importantly, I care deeply about player wellbeing, enjoyment and long-term development.
